Again I turned to herbs to help Sage’s immune system and this time I decided to try Global Herbs Defenze Capsules. Being a capsule this supplement is a little difficult to give to cats, so I smear butter over it to make it slippy then push it down his throat once a day. I then syringe a little water to wash it down for him.

To help control the bacteria in his mouth I started to use Pet Dent Oral Gel and alternate it with Pet Dent Toothpaste. Both of these products contain Chlorhexadine which I have found very effective in helping to control his mouth problem. I put it on my finger and rub it over his top teeth and gums once daily, (he won’t let me put it on his lower jaw or brush his teeth). Read more

Two years after the first attack of inflammed gums around his left lower canine tooth, in March 2009 we suffered another major setback. Sage began dragging his biscuits out of his food bowl onto the floor one by one, drawing them to himself and eating them gingerly. This was very odd but amusing behaviour and at first I thought he had developed yet another cute trait like the ARTHUR cat on tele, but it wasn’t long before he began hissing at his food again. I checked his mouth and to my horror both sides of his lower gums were severely inflammed and smelly. It was obvious to me then that the reason he had been dragging his food out of his bowl was that somehow he was blaming the food bowl for the pain in his mouth. Read More

Not long after this I decided to tackle his problems from a different direction, so instead of giving him antibiotics I put him onto a supplement called Immune Plus from Phytopet in the hope of boosting his immune system. My theory was that the continual use of antibiotics had lowered his immune system, hence the frequent and longer bouts of cat flu.

I was amazed at the difference in him after a few days of using this supplement. He became less snotty and at last his appetite increased. After a few months he started to put on weight and looked healthier than I had seen him for years. He didn’t like the taste of the supplement so I used to mix it with 1/2 ml of milk and syringe it down him. Read more

During Sage’s adulthood I vaccinated him yearly as my vet recommended. He continued to snuffle and sneeze with bouts of flu which grew more and more prolonged as time went by. He is a big cat but he never put on any weight in fact , by the time he was 7yrs old he was like a bag of bones.

He had spent many years curled up on the sofa sleeping instead of playing and food had become a real issue with him. Because of his weight (or rather, lack of it) I used to buy lots of dry different foods and put them in lots of different dishes. I would then carry him to them and try to persuade him to eat for me which he rarley did. Read More

Sage transformed from protectee to protector and suddenly it was he that offered company, warmth, grooming and comfort to my lovely gentle Shadow. As Shadow’s condition progressed his appetite became very poor with his weight loss startlingly apparent. Read More

When baby Sage arrived he was introduced to the rest of my cat family which consisted of my dear old Shadow who was twelve-ish, Misty who was two-ish and Gypsy who was one-ish.

Shadow loved him, Misty avoided him and Gypsy hated him with a vengance. I am sure she thought he was a mouse of sorts and stalked him with the intent of harming him whenever she could get near him. I had to keep them seperated when I was at work as I was fearful she would kill him. Read More

Shadow & Secret

Many years ago two 8 week old kittens were bought in to the clinic to be put to sleep because they had severe cat flu, so I adopted them instead. I named the black and white female “Secret” and the black male “Shadow”.

During treatment both kittens made a good recovery with no lasting effects except that the virus had taken one eye in each kitten. Secret had several bits of her Iris adhesed to the cornea distorting her sight and Shadow had a very small disfigured eye that didn’t open properly and weeped continually due to adhesed tear ducts, but neither cat was ever bothered by their disabilities as fortunately they had one good eye each. read more
