Shadow’s Illness

My dear Shadow had been diagnosed with kidney problems by the time Sage reached the end of his first year. At that time there was very little treatment available for kidney cats so slowly but inevitably Shadows health deteriorated.

Sage transformed from protectee to protector and suddenly it was he that offered company, warmth, grooming and comfort to my lovely gentle Shadow. As Shadow’s condition progressed his appetite became very poor with his weight loss startlingly apparent. Sage understood how poorly Shadow was so the two were never far apart. He took his duties of care very seriously, even forgoing his playtime with Gypsy.

Sadly Shadow’s eventual passing on caused us all much distress and devastation. I felt hopeless, totally lost, like part of me was missing and Misty, Gypsy and Sage, wandered aimlessly around the house looking for him in dark corners and wailing mornfully into the night.

We all missed him dreadfully. He was a very special cat in so many different ways and I feel honoured to have shared my life with him. Although he was top cat in our house, he held this position not through aggression, jealousy or dominance but through his ability to be calm, kind, gentle and completely selfless, to love all creatures great and small no matter what species, to never harm anything or anyone. In this way he earned the respect of all others, and no one ever wished to upset him.

Gradually we had to adapt to life without Shadow but we will be overjoyed when we meet him again in heaven.
